New Mexico Teaching Degrees & Programs

In addition completing a bachelor’s degree or teaching preparation program, New Mexico teachers must also complete an additional amount of credit hours depending on the field. For instance, teachers in elementary schools must complete, in addition to student teaching, 30-36 credit hours in elementary education. Of these hours, six must be in reading and 24 in specific subject content.

Bachelor’s in Education Degrees in NM

The College of Education and Technology at Eastern New Mexico University offers bachelor degree programs in elementary education/special education with concentrations in bilingual education, English as a second language, language arts and reading. The programs also offer several minors. The Department of Educational Studies at ENMU also offers a secondary education baccalaureate program. Students in the bachelor degree programs complete core courses, major-related courses and must complete student teaching requirements.

New Mexico Highlands University offers undergraduate programs in special education, elementary education, early childhood multicultural education, secondary education and bilingual education. NMHU implements a lot of hands-on training so students get teaching experience while still in college.

New Mexico State University – Main Campus has the following departments within its College of Education: curriculum and instruction; counseling and educational psychology; educational leadership and administration; kinesiology & dance; and special education and communication disorders. Within each department students can choose from majors and areas of concentration such as a bachelor’s degree in special education with licensure in elementary and secondary education. Several bachelor degree teaching programs are also offered at the University of New Mexico – Main Campus.

Master’s in Education Degrees in NM

Eastern New Mexico University offers master degrees in bilingual education, educational administration, educational technology, career and technical education, pedagogy and learning, educational technology and elementary education as well as several minors. New Mexico Highlands University offers master degrees in education, curriculum and instruction, special education and educational leadership. These graduate programs also offer several areas of concentration. For instance NMHU’s curriculum and instruction major offers emphasis areas in technology education, life science, English, reading, early childhood education and mathematics to name a few.

New Mexico State University offers several graduate programs with majors in education, curriculum & instruction, and teaching as well as areas of concentration. The University of New Mexico offers master degree programs in health education, physical education, elementary education, secondary education and educational leadership. These programs are ideal licensed teachers who want to advance education and obtain additional certifications and licenses.

Online Teaching Degrees in New Mexico

Several online master degrees can be earned at Eastern New Mexico University including master of education administration, elementary education, physical education, reading and literacy, career and technical education, secondary education and special education. The secondary and special education programs come in both a licensed and an alternative license version.

New Mexico State University offers an online Master of Arts in Education – Curriculum & Instruction with emphasis on early childhood education. New Mexico State University offers an undergraduate elementary education certification program.

The University of New Mexico offers graduate certification programs in special education specialist; curriculum and instruction; and educational leadership. These programs are for students who want to advance their education beyond the master’s degree but don’t wish to pursue doctoral degrees.
