There are at least a couple of reasons why aspiring teachers might want to study and teach in New York. Besides the opportunity to live in the “Big Apple“, students can choose from more than 100 colleges and universities, which offer almost any kind of teaching degree possible as well as licensure, specialization and certification programs.

Additionally, New York ranks 1st in the nation in terms of wages paid to elementary, middle school and secondary school teachers. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that the average annual wages for elementary, middle school and secondary school teachers were $74,830, $75,470 and $76,680, respectively as of May 2014.

Bachelor’s in Education Degrees in New York

College of Staten Island – CUNY offers bachelor degree programs in early childhood education (birth-2), childhood education (grades 1-6), adolescence education (7-12) and special education. These programs prepare students for certification in each particular area or grade level. Bachelor degree programs in adolescent education, childhood education and physical education are offered at Manhattan College.

MC also offers a dual childhood/special education program. MC offers students choices of various areas of concentration. New York University offers various bachelor and master degree programs. Baccalaureate studies can be found in special education, early childhood education, English education, math education and childhood education. NYU’s programs offer various concentrations and minors so students can customize their areas of study.

Master’s in Education Degrees in New York

An abundance of master and graduate degree programs are available through the Curriculum & Instruction department at Adelphi University. Students can choose from adolescent (high school) education, childhood (elementary) education, early childhood education, mathematics education, special education and middle school education, among many others. Many of these majors also offer minors and concentration areas. While some of these programs may be actual master degrees, other may be graduate certifications that help the student earn additional certifications.

Additionally, some may be to obtain additional certifications, others may be for initial certification. College of Staten Island – CUNY offers Master of Science programs in childhood education, adolescence education, special education, special education adolescence generalist and teaching of English to speakers of other languages as well as concentrations. The adolescence education program offers concentrations in mathematics, English, biology or social studies. Master degree students must also complete research projects.

Fordham University also offers various master degree programs for those seeking initial certification or those pursuing additional certifications. They also offer dual-degree programs that allow a student to earn both a bachelor and master teaching degree in five years. Syracuse University, which offers several bachelor and master degree teaching programs, offers a 12-month master degree program.

Online Teaching Degrees in New York

Various online teaching degree programs are offered through the State University of New York, whether you’re pursuing a bachelor degree, master degree or an advanced certificate. SUNY at Albany offers online master degree programs in curriculum development and instructional technology, childhood education, early childhood and reading. St. John’s University offers several master degree teaching programs. In addition to the many on-campus teaching programs, the Teachers College at Columbia University also offers online programs.

New York Teacher Certification & Specializations

College of Staten Island – CUNY offers certification programs in childhood education, adolescence education, special education and TESOL. They also offer certification in specific subject areas for students that are already licensed teachers but wish to earn additional certifications to increase their value as teachers. Fordham University offers several dual-certification full- and part-time programs.

An example of this is the Master of Science in Teaching – Early Childhood Special Education program that provides certification as both an early childhood teacher and a teacher of students with disabilities in early childhood. Metropolitan College of New York also offers a dual childhood/special education certification program. New York University offers certification at several levels and in several fields.
