Illinois Teaching Degrees

Becoming a licensed teacher in Illinois involves much of the same processes as other states. Teachers must complete at least a bachelor's degree teaching program or a non-teaching bachelor degree program and a teacher preparation program. They must also pass required assessment tests.

Online Teaching Degrees in Illinois

There are multiple online degrees in education available at universities in Illinois, including an online/hybrid secondary education certification program that allows teachers to be certified to teach English, math, social science or science to grades 6-12. Because it is an online/hybrid program, students may be required to attend campus a couple times a year. There are also several online certification programs in English as a second language (k-12) and learning behavior specialist (k-12). They also offer online Master of Arts degrees in English, history and mathematics.

Chicago State University offers an online Master of Science in Education with a concentration in physical education. Concordia University offers various online master degree programs in areas such as reader education, teacher and learning, educational technology, curriculum and instruction, early childhood education, early childhood special education, reading education, and special education, among others.

Bachelor’s in Education Degrees in Illinois

Augustana College offers bachelor degree programs in elementary education, secondary education (6-12) with concentrations in mathematics, English language arts, social science and science. Additionally, AC offers licensure programs in foreign language, art and music education (k-12). The bachelor degree programs include at least three internships and also offer some students opportunities to study in Florida or Jamaica to obtain hands-on training.

Chicago State University offers a bachelor’s degree in elementary education and elementary education with a middle school option. CSU also offers an undergraduate degree in early childhood education with a focus in bilingual education. Eastern Illinois University has a large variety of bachelor degree teaching programs including bachelor degrees in elementary education, health studies, middle school education, kinesiology and sports studies, recreation administration, special education and secondary education.

Each of these majors offer several areas of concentration. Bachelor degree programs in early childhood education, elementary school, physical education, secondary education, special education: early childhood and special education: learning behavior specialist are all offered at Judson University along with various areas of concentration. For instance, the secondary education program offers concentrations in biology, science, mathematics, physical education and social science.

Master’s in Education Degrees in Illinois

Chicago State University offers a Master of Arts in Teaching for students who have a non-teaching degree but want a career teaching. CSU also has master degree programs in special education learning behavior specialist, educational leadership, and curriculum and foundations. Eastern Illinois University offers Master of Science programs in educational administration, elementary education, community counseling, school counseling, physical education, special education and school psychology.

Concordia University is rich in graduate programs. Illinois Teacher Certification & Specializations

UIS offers an educational leadership administrative certification program. Individuals who hold non-teaching bachelor degrees can obtain their teaching license with the non-degree certification program offered at Chicago State University. Concordia University offers certification programs in ESL, ESL and bilingual, special education, reading, technology specialist, secondary education and school counseling. These are Master of Arts programs that provide the student with certification in that specific area upon successful completion of all program requirements.
